VA Eastern Colorado HealthCare System (ECHCS) is complexity level 1a and provides a full range of state-of- the-art patient care services, and will soon be providing care in a new state-of-the-art hospital in Aurora, CO. ECHCS provides tertiary care and services to over 89,000 patients and is a major referral center for veterans living in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and New Mexico. ECHCS serves as an educational and research center, it is highly affiliated with medical and educational institutions. Health Care Services are provided at 15 different geographically dispersed locations incorporating nine Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Primary Care Telehealth Outpatient Clinics, one local and one remote Community Living Center, Homeless Veteran's Domiciliary, a Community Referral and Resource Center, a Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center and VA presence on two DOD bases; Fort Carson and U.S. Air Force Academy covering a geographical area of over 10,000 square miles. The Registered Nurse (RN) will be assigned to 5 North (5N) a highly acute medical / surgical / telemetry / oncology unit providing care to a veteran population with a widely diverse medical, cardiac, neurological and hematology/oncology diagnoses in varying states of the disease process, including end of life. The RN is responsible and accountable as primary nurse for a defined group of patients during the shift assigned. The RN assumes responsibility and accountability for individual judgements and actions and acts as a client advocate. The RN has excellent communication skills and interprets, adheres to, and communicates nursing service goals, objectives, policies and procedures to staff, patients and the health care team. Based on education, experience, and competency, the RN may be assigned responsibility as preceptor and/or charge nurse. The RN functions as a resource for colleagues as needed. Duties include but are not limited to:
Apply nursing processes in determining the needs of the patient and providing the delivery of quality nursing care.
Completing accurate and expedient documentation within the medical record
Identifying emergent situations and initiating the necessary interventions in conjunction with the patient and others
Working collaboratively by communicating and interacting effectively with all disciplines, patients and patients' families
Applying knowledge and appropriate use of internal and external resources
Assess resource utilization and safety issues taking appropriate action
Maintain expertise in areas of practice
Work Schedule: Candidate must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours. The candidate must be willing to be placed, detailed or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.
