The Violence Policy Center (VPC), a national gun violence prevention organization, is seeking a part-time public health analyst to aid in our research and publishing activities.
Founded in 1988, the VPC is a national 501(c)3 nonprofit public interest organization that approaches gun violence as a broad-based public health issue affecting all Americans, as opposed to solely a crime issue, with a strong focus on holding the firearms industry accountable for its role in driving our nation’s gun violence crisis. The VPC conducts unique ongoing research on gun violence, the firearms industry and gun lobby, and develops effective approaches to reduce gun death and injury. We are seeking a part-time (20 hours per week) public health professional to conduct original research on the impact of gun death and injury. This will include continuing current VPC research activities required for specific annual publications as well as expanding our research and publication activities in this area.
The candidate should possess an MPH or similar graduate public health degree and be able to conduct relevant research and then consistently present it in a manner that is easily accessible to a general audience, including advocates, organizations, policymakers, and the news media. Accuracy and attention to detail combined with top-level writing skills are essential as is the ability to work independently. At times, work must be conducted under immediate, tight deadlines. Fluency in Spanish would be a bonus. Enthusiasm for the VPC’s mission is essential.
This position is planned as remote although the employee may work from the VPC’s Washington, DC offices.
Responsibilities will include continuing current VPC research activities required for specific annual publications as well as expanding our research and publication activities in this area. This will include:
Analyzing information contained in various federal and state public health and criminal databases as well as utilizing original source information.
Under guidance from senior staff, continuing the research and writing of current VPC annual studies (including assisting in the production of graphic materials) as well as identifying potential new areas of public health research and publication.
In coordination with senior and communications staff, responding to specific queries from press, policymakers, advocates, and organizations.
Identifying on an ongoing basis new outside public health research of utility to the VPC’s educational and advocacy mission.
