JOB TITLE: Patient Companion

JOB SUMMARY:

Provides a safe environment, companionship and supportive care for patients that require constant observation as identified by a nurse or physician.

Maintains a safe environment for any patient requiring 1:1 supervision.

Maintains constant observation of patient.

Responsible to accompany the patient if he or she must leave the unit for reasons identified by the care provider.

Responsible for ensuring the very best patient/family experience by optimizing all customer interaction. Foster a positive work environment through mutual support and cooperation and adheres to GHS and unit specific Service Standards.

Works under the direction of the Operations Manager.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

Demonstrates an understanding of de-escalation techniques and the importance of patient safety.

Demonstrates a strong oral communication skills.

Demonstrates an understanding of essential care needs.

Demonstrates an understanding of patient confidentiality.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school Diploma required.

BLS certification preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work is performed in a clinical environment.

Work requires constant patient focus.

Work may require constant engagement with patient(s).

Work may require monitoring a patient during diagnostic, or other necessary exams.

Work may require sitting for long periods of time or walking.

GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER: (GMC), located Danville, Pa., the largest tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital in the region, is licensed for 475 beds, including 89 pediatric beds in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.  GMC, a Magnet Hospital, maintains the region’s only Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with additional qualifications in pediatrics. GMC offers an array of highly specialized medical and surgical services, including neurosciences, cardiovascular services, transplantation, women’s health (in the Women’s Pavilion), oncology and orthopaedics.  The Hospital for Advanced Medicine serves as an integrated center for the most critical patients. Outpatient services are available on and off campus.
