POSITION SUMMARY: The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible forproviding strong, effective and inspired medical leadership for physicians and medicalstaff of the hospital to ensure that the highest level of quality medical careis provided to patients in a cost effective and efficient manner. The CMO is anintegral member of the Senior Leadership team. Via work with carelines, medicaldirectors, medical staff, patient care services and administration, the CMO isresponsible for ongoing planning, development, implementation and continuousimprovement of the programs and services involving and/or provided by themedical staff. The CMO facilitates the Medical Executive Committee and itsfunctions and represent the best interests of patients and their families,physicians and medical staff and the hospital. The CMO participates in system-wide initiatives as requested.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS: Strategic: - Lead the LBMC medical staff recruitment and development initiatives.
- Promotes effective communication among medical staff, senior leadership, and governance.
- Participate in strategic planning at the senior executive level.
- Evaluate and improve patient, family and physician satisfaction.
- Assist in alignment of the business and clinical objectives of physicians and the organization
- Promote advocacy and networking by participating in HASC, CMA, and CHA
- Promote strong linkages with community organizations.
- Assures a clinical voice in management decisions
Operations: - Ensuring and facilitating that patients receive the highest standard of medical care.
- Assist in ensuring all healthcare regulations and safety standards are met
- Assist medical staff leaders to perform their functions as described in the medical staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations
- Oversee LB physician credentialing and privileging process.
- Oversee physician aspects of maintenance and/or acquisition of licensing & accreditation by regulatory agencies (e.g., DHS, JCAHO).
- Function as primary contact to resolve physician medical care issues and grievances, including disruptive physicians, coverage, etc.
- Champions physician partnership with nursing, case management, and other ancillary services
- Promote, champion, and collaborate efforts to reduce length of stay
- Promote and facilitate coordination of care and progression of care
- Develops strategy for the growth of Academic affiliations and research partnerships with UCI, UCLA and others
- Participate as voting member of LBMC Medical Executive Committee, and other medical staff committees as defined in medical staff bylaws
- Facilitate education & compliance of physicians with medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, and optimum utilization of hospital facilities.
- Participate in utilization review and assist in ensuring optimum use of medical center resources
- Assist customer relations representatives as requested in patient and family grievances and complaints.
- Participate in Senior Leadership Council meetings and other administrative meetings as appointed by CEO
- Participate as a voting member of the Quality Committee, and as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of LBMC
- Participate in medical staff peer review processes as defined in medical staff bylaws, rules and regulations, peer review policies, and as requested by medical staff.
- Support and model behaviors and practices supporting Medical Staff Professionalism Program. Participate in LBMC Medical Professionalism Committee and other professionalism activities as requested by medical staff, LBMC Chief of Staff, & CEO.
Liaison with MedicalStaff - Support Physician Leadership Development
- Supports and assists in integration and coordination of departments and care centers
- Facilitation and communication among and between medical leaders
- Medical education based upon gaps in clinical effectiveness.
- Compliance with best practice guidelines
Quality & Safety - Collaborates with VP Quality to facilitate an integrated approach with medical staff and the health system on quality and safety initiatives
- Assists in performance improvement metrics at practitioner level, hospital and health system level.
- Work with quality department and information systems to assure effective data collection and reporting systems for continuous performance improvement
- Attend and participate in Performance Improvement Council (as LB Chair), Memorial Care Physician Society Board (as LB CMO) and Patient Safety Committee meetings.
- Promote the development of best practices as a member of the Memorial Care Physician Society; responsible for the medical components of LB quality management.
- Support and collaborate with all departments in championing and supporting Culture of Safety and High Reliability Organization
