The Department of Population Health Sciences (DPHS) within the Geisinger Research Institute is growing and seeks to recruit multiple faculty members to join our multidisciplinary team. The DPHS is embedded in the Geisinger health system, a large integrated health system in Pennsylvania, and the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, with a longstanding commitment to research and a research portfolio that includes funding from the NIH, CDC, PCORI, state and foundation grants, and industry. The DPHS faculty includes a strong team of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, behavior scientists, health economists, and clinician researchers. Faculty have access to vast data resources, including longitudinal electronic medical record (EMR) data spanning more than 25 years, claims data, genomic data, and environmental data, and there are also opportunities to lead the evaluation of healthcare interventions in a range of clinical settings. We invite applicants with expertise in a variety of methodological and content areas, as described below in the additional job description.
Provides technical and intellectual leadership to a coherent research program that contributes new knowledge to the relevant areas of investigation.
Directs day-to-day development, maintenance, and supervision of a productive and nationally competitive research program.
Identifies the research question, formulates the hypothesis, plans the experiments, records the observations and data, analyzes the data, and draws conclusions.
Prepares/submits applications for external funding from national agencies; garnering funding in support the research program.
Oversees completion of the specific aims of funded projects.
Maintains a record of independent scholarship as demonstrated by high quality publications specific to the discipline.
Solidifies an emerging national and international reputation through presentations at national meetings, service on study sections or ad hoc grant review committees, and peer reviewer for journals.
Takes a lead role in providing technical assistance in service to other departments, clinical associates, residents, fellows and students.

Health Economics: The DPHS seeks to recruit health economist / health policy faculty whose work focuses on quantitative studies across a range of substantive and/or methodological areas related to population health and healthcare delivery evaluation. The candidate must also have proven expertise in one or more of the following research areas: access to health care and the role of insurance coverage; health outcomes, including the effects of provider payments and delivery system reforms on health care costs and quality; and the impact of health policies on health and health care. Experience in engagement with health insurance organizations is desired.
Cardiovascular Epidemiology: The DPHS seeks to recruit Cardiovascular Epidemiologist faculty to support our active cardiovascular disease (CVD) research program. The DPHS collaborates with Geisinger's Heart Institute, the Genomics Medicine Institute and Department of Translational Data Science & Informatics on a range of CVD studies that leverage Geisinger's genomic, cardiac imaging, and EMR data.
Social Epidemiology: Social determinants of health (SDoH) has emerged as an ever-important construct in areas of access to healthcare, receipt of personalized care, and health outcomes. The integration of SDoH in health care is a priority of Geisinger and the DPHS is dedicated to identifying health disparities and promoting health equity through health care innovation. The DPHS seeks to recruit Social Epidemiologist faculty with expertise in the application of quantitative and/or qualitative research methods to the study of SDoH in relation to health care. The ideal candidate will have experience in identifying and analyzing sources of SDoH data, incorporating SDoH into EMR data platforms, and/or developing/evaluating care models that integrate SDoH data.
Health Services Research (HSR): The DPHS seeks to recruit Health Services Research (HSR) faculty whose work focuses on this multidisciplinary field investigating all factors, systems, processes, and personal health behaviors that impact access to, as well as quality and cost of healthcare and health outcomes, specifically around chronic disease. Geisinger is invested in expanding HSR across multiple clinical institutes, with a commitment to expanding Geisinger's data-driven approach to personalized medicine. Given the Research Institute's existing faculty, clinical research areas to grow HSR include, but are not limited to, primary care, pediatrics, urology, nephrology, cardiology, and adult obesity.
Obesity Behavioral Interventions: The DPHS and Geisinger's Obesity Institute seek to recruit a dually appointed health intervention scientist whose work focuses on transforming care to prevent and treat obesity through multidisciplinary and translational research. The candidate must have proven experience and expertise as a health intervention researcher in one or more of the following areas: adult obesity interventions, mobile health tracking, telehealth, and/or psychometrics and research design as they relate to patient-centered outcomes and population health. Specific interest in behavioral intervention experience for the treatment/prevention of adult obesity is desired.
Candidates must possess an earned doctorate (e.g., PhD, MD) in related fields for at least one of the content areas. Each position is open rank; however, priority is given to associate and full professor levels. Experience in use and analysis of EMR data is desired for all positions. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a successful, externally-funded research program, either through independent or collaborative projects, and provide service to the health system, their profession, and the community. Appointment at higher levels must show a record of extramural grant funding as a Principal or Co-Investigator and publication of peer-reviewed collaborative research.
