This Senior Application Developer position is an exciting opportunity for an expert IT Professional! The Senior Application Developer will work as part of an international team that is leading, providing analysis, designing and supporting national-level health information systems to be used in Mozambique. This position will work with developers to create and implement new features of systems and maintain data security and integrity, as well as train data managers and software developers on applications design and development to support extraction, analysis and reporting of data.
Successful candidates will possess familiarity with core concepts, practices, and procedures in database design, programming, systems development, and software engineering (including, but not limited to, object-oriented techniques and languages, database principles and programming, and open-source methodologies). Basic familiarity with clinical processes and clinical terminology, data privacy practices laws as well as ability to learn new technology and practices are needed.
The position is housed within the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH); The person in this role must be willing to travel for a finite period to Africa.
The Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health (VIGH) builds capacity through interdisciplinary global health education and training programs, conducts implementation science and research, and provides technical assistance service to government and civil sector organizations in countries supported by the President's Emergency Plan for HIV/AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through an an affiliated organization, Friends in Global Health (FGH).

Expected responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Understand, contribute to and advise in-country developers on the core codebase for the health information systems.
Design, maintain, and deploy patches and modules for the health information systems to meet user and business needs.
Gather and document user requests for future upgrades and enhancements to the core and modules of the health information systems.
Conduct and/or inform IT on system-wide tests.
Lead developers in assisting with Tier 3 technical support.
Manage developer workloads in JIRA ticketing system.
Conduct daily scrums and handle blockers.
Assemble and lead coding sprints.
Curate vague JIRA tickets or epics into finite tasks.
Work with forms and concepts team, data quality, reporting, IT and other developers to coordinate the development process and meet project deadlines.
Mentor junior developers.
Make decisions on methods to accommodate new types of data requests.
Make decisions regarding systems programming.
Seek approval before making higher-level decisions to ensure that decisions support the long-term strategic direction for VIGH's Global Health Informatics Activities.
Seek feedback from others as necessary to ensure decisions do not conflict with business needs.
Create routines for outputting health information data from systems into other analyzable formats.
Develop data extraction, reporting, and analysis programs for the health information systems as needed.
Use advanced problem-solving skills to troubleshoot a variety of issues.
Use creative thinking to achieve goals and improve processes.
Oversee the work, training, development and project plans of in-country software developers.
Work with developers and users of the health information systems to maintain data security and integrity.
Serve as a resource to team members.
Collaborate with team members to ensure current and future needs are being met.
Other duties as assigned.
