About Central Michigan University College of Medicine
Founded 125 years ago, Central Michigan University is a major, national university with 26,000 students, more than 30 remote locations in the U.S. and Canada, and 225,000 alumni worldwide. That commit...ment to fulfilling unmet needs continues today through many newer programs, including our College of Medicine, which in May 2017 graduated its first class of doctors dedicated to serving medically underserved communities. With student-athletes who are expected to perform equally well in the classroom and on the field, CMU is a member of the NCAA Division I Mid-American Conference. CMU Athletics regularly earns accolades for student excellence in the classroom (almost 30 percent of our students were honored in spring 2017 for GPAs of 3.5 or higher) and on the field, with frequent men’s and women’s championship seasons in sports such as football, basketball, gymnastics, field hockey, soccer, baseball and softball, and wrestling. Central is located in a quaint, tight-knit community in the heart of central lower Michigan. Our community offers a robust mix of outdoor opportunities, family attractions. and restaurants and brew pubs. Mount Pleasant’s small-town life is complemented by cultural activities on campus, including concerts, plays and guest speakers. Mount Pleasant is an hour or two from most Michigan destination spots, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing and Ann Arbor, as well as the state’s sunset beaches, golf and ski resorts, and our famous “Up North” communities, state parks and lakes. ABOUT CMU COLLEGE OF MEDICINE: In addition to training future physicians for clinical excellence, CMED intends to grow its existing research programs to train clinician-scientists to explore areas of inquiry relevant to its mission. Even though research in the College of Medicine is new, its researchers are already receiving recognition for their investigation and findings. Part of CMED’s vision is to promote a collaboration of investigators on the Mt. Pleasant and Saginaw campuses that will engage faculty, students, residents and regional professionals in clinical and health systems research. The dynamic nature of healthcare evolution at this time brings exciting and valuable opportunities to expand this work. Further, the region has unique frameworks and initiatives that facilitate health systems research. CMED researchers have already secured notable extramural funding including $1.6M in NIH funding in 2018 across 9 awards. CMED is eager to establish and develop health services and population health research programs, aimed at integrating students and faculty in research dedicated to understanding and improving health care in rural and medically underserved environments. Opportunities abound to leverage existing relationships across Michigan and the upper Midwest and to form new partnerships with both public and private partners to advance research in the service of rural and underserved urban communities. Potential opportunities include: • Working with The Dow Chemical Company, the world’s second largest chemical producer, which is headquartered in Midland and has a longstanding history of epidemiologic research with well over 200 publications and a database that has tracked US employees since 1940. Dow also has an extensive set of health and environmental scientists including one of the largest private sector toxicology organizations centered in Midland. • Expanding the partnership with the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance (MiHIA), a well-established multi-stakeholder, community collaboration working to achieve a community of health excellence for the 14-county region it serves. MiHIA is a multi-sector, multi-stakeholder collaborative which is nationally recognized and has a positive track record of sustainable systems change efforts and hosts the regional comprehensive dashboard of hundreds of health metrics. MiHIA has a broad portfolio with partnerships and funding from the CDC, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Michigan Health Endowment Fund and numerous others. • Expanding collaboration with the other six colleges at CMU to build research stemming from the recently created interdisciplinary center for community health and wellness. • Building on the strong relationship with local tribal leaders to identify health disparities and improvement initiatives for that community. • Further the existing partnership with the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance (GLBRA) and MiHIA to find ways to conduct research into the transformational THRIVE (Transforming Health Regionally in a Vibrant Economy) initiative. and its portfolio impact on both health and the regional economy. • Collaborating with existing hospital partners for clinical data available part of one of Michigan Clinically Integrated Network. As a pillar of the central Michigan community with leaders who are connected and influential in the region, CMED offers virtually unlimited opportunities for collaborative research. Candidates who are passionate about conducting large scale, “big data” driven longitudinal research on improving health outcomes in underserved areas will find this area rich in resources and desire.
