  • The Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a full time Assistant Scientist position to support federal and state-funded research projects focused on firefighter health and safety. The Caban-Martinez Lab is focused on surveillance and the design/evaluation of workplace interventions to improve the health of first responders. The lab has received new funding to conduct surveillance of COVID-19 infection and vaccine effectiveness among firefighters, healthcare workers and frontline/essential workers (https://www.ffccs.org/recover). Dr Alberto Caban-Martinez will be leading efforts for the UM academic partner arm of the RECOVER Cohort study and is seeking a talented assistant scientist to support the research and administrative activities of the RECOVER and other firefighter COVID-19 projects. The principal objective of the position will be to manage the Florida RECOVER cohort research team in the weekly biomonitoring of cohort participants. The incumbent will assist in the management of firefighter health and safety projects, analyzes data, runs reports, manages project resources and presents scientific results. They will be expected to develop and function as an independent scientist under the mentoring of more established scientists in the lab. Moreover, the incumbent will support the University’s research goals and objectives by performing field based (community-based) experiments in his/her areas of interest, expertise, or assignment.

     

    CORE JOB FUNCTIONS    

     

    • Contributes to basic and applied research activities including authorship of scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.    

    • Publishes in referred journals in collaboration with department leadership or independently.

    • Supervises and provides guidance to research employees and non-exempt staff.

    • Supports the writing of extramural proposals with approval of senior managing staff.       

    • Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.

    • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products.

    • Provides ready access to all experimental data for the faculty researchers, supervisors, and other relevant staff.          

    • Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).

    • Assists the Principal Investigator in preparing materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.

    • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

    • The successful applicant must possess at minimum, a Ph.D. in epidemiology, industrial hygiene, environmental health or occupational health and safety.

    • Other highly desired qualifications include knowledge of a statistical package, and experience with large cohort data management.

    • Interacts with the principal investigator, research project team, and external research collaborators in conduct the research project activities as per study to protocol.

    • Other highly desired qualifications include knowledge of Matlab or Python, and experience with time series and frequency domain analysis, and the ability to analyze mooring and other in situ observations and output from numerical models for scientific research.

    • The incumbent must also have at least 1 year of relevant Post-Doctoral research experience work (or professional scientific work experience) and demonstrated ability in publishing results in the peer-reviewed literature.      

    • Ability to recognize, analyze and solve a variety of problems.

    • Ability to exercise sound judgement in making critical decisions.

    CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                        

     

    Education:

    Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree relevant field.

     

    Experience:  

    Minimum 1 year of relevant experience.

    • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.

    • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.

    • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions
