Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) is a mid-level laboratory California licensed professional with a scope of practice that includes waived and/or moderate complex testing under CLIA and reporting of the test results. This license does not include high complexity testing under CLIA, and some moderate complexity testing such as manual leukocyte differentials, and blood typing performed to determine donor/recipient compatibility, such as recipient & donor ABO group/D (Rho) type/antigen typing, direct antiglobulin test, tests for unexpected antibody detection & identification, and crossmatch procedures. This position supports and promotes best practices to include patient safety and quality standards in the clinical laboratory. Participation is required in the continuous quality improvement process through professional development, continuing education, and quality assurance.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Demonstrates the ability to conduct blood smear review, microscopic urinalysis, and blood typing of moderate complexity, such as automated ABO / Rh testing and antibody screen testing.
Maintains a working knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures, including the use of specialized analytical instrumentation, reporting of test results, quality control and calibration requirements and preventative maintenance.
Performs accurate laboratory testing to contribute to the ongoing treatment of our patients.
Remains organized, and detail oriented to determine accurate results relating to various testing within the scope of practice.
Maintains technical competency to ensure quality testing and delivery are accomplished for patient population.
Follows directives give by the Clinical Laboratory Scientist ensuring clear communication across the healthcare continuum.
