The Department of Health Policy and Management (HPM) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) invites applications for two tenure track assistant professors whose research focuses on the intersections of gun violence, policy, and equity. One position will be partly supported by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that seeks to grow the number of researchers working in this field. This position will also be supported in part by the proceeds from a $1.5 million endowment from the Bloomberg American Health Initiative, which will designate the recipient as a Bloomberg Assistant Professor in American Health. This endowment and title will be for three years with the possibility of renewal. The Bloomberg American Health Initiative aims to improve health and save lives in the United States through education, research, and practice. Supported by a transformational $300 million gift from the Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Initiative is training a new generation of leaders from multiple sectors in the tools of public health, supporting research to generate new insights about what works, and championing innovative programs and policies that can become national models. Faculty members chosen through this search will participate in the leadership of the Initiative's violence prevention efforts. More information about this role will be available through the search process.
A second assistant professor will have a primary appointment in the Department and will also be affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University Advancing Racial Equity in Health, Housing, and Education (ARE-HHE) cluster, which in this search seeks a candidate whose research addresses the impact of gun violence on neighborhoods, educational institutions, and/or the health of young people. This interdisciplinary research cluster is one of 10 of the University’s Bloomberg Distinguished Professorship Clusters (Bloomberg Distinguished Professorship Clusters | VPR at JHU), which are coalescing communities of diverse scholars who will draw on each other’s unique strengths to make meaningful impact and generate solutions. This position with the ARE-HHE cluster seeks an exceptional scholar committed to contributing to our knowledgebase about solutions to enable more effective and socially responsible practices in advancing health for all.
Candidates should have a PhD, ScD, or comparable degree in health policy, epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, African American studies, public policy, sociology, criminology, or related field with research interests in gun violence prevention, policy, and equity. Ideal candidates for this position will conduct research that focuses on or informs policies to prevent gun violence in communities experiencing high levels of gun violence and addresses disparities in deaths, injuries, and incarceration for gun-related offenses. Candidates with an interest in policies that address structural determinants of inequalities and gun violence, invest in communities, and implement community-level interventions are encouraged to apply. Candidates should have a strong potential to develop externally funded research.
Faculty hired through this search will be a core faculty of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions and have an opportunity to affiliate with any of the Department’s 18 Centers and Institutes, and Affiliated Programs, in support of their research and practice activities.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach graduate level courses within the Department of Health Policy and Management. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to graduate-level advising, mentoring, and teaching excellence.
