Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Epilepsy Clinical area is responsible for coordinating and maintaining a high volume of throughput across our epileptic care continuum and EMU. The primary function of this individual will be to support all programmatic requirements that aid in a higher quality of care which suppprt both our EMU patients and providers. The coordinator will also maintain a consistent communication pathway with all relevant surgical and medical practices upon follow-up and discharge.

Responsibilities:

• Serves as clinical interface between epilepsy providers, neurology staff, neurosurgery staff, pediatrics, nursing staff, and all other services within hospital environment (discharge planning, social work, case management, etc.)
• Determine inpatient educational needs for patients and families with epilepsy and seizure and other neurological disorders in collaboration with pateints full clinical care team of neurology, neurusrgery and EMU providers.
• Provides education for this population in collaboration with patients care team.
• Ensures presurgical work up across departments including epilepsy, neurosurgery, radiology, neuropsychology, neurointervential are perfomed and results complied in a timely manner in preparation for epilepsy surgery conferenceSeveres as liason between out-patient and in-patient teams
• Identifies needs and assists in initiation of new policies/procedures that ensure appropriate care for specified populations in collaboration with EMU Directors.
• Ensures quality measures, including surgical outcome scores, are accurately reviewed and maintained at high level, in collaboration with EMU providers and medical leadership.
• Interacts/Interfaces with EMU directors and Directors of Neurology and Neurosurgery so that to ensure specified population receives superior care.

• Ensures that all referring providers receive written results of testing.
• Schedules patients for and attends the epilepsy surgery conference, creates document for the chart summarizing findings and consensus recommendations following.
• Educates patients and families regarding seizure first aid and the use of rescue medications at home.
• Collaborates with research team in ongoing pharmaceutical and neurodevelopmental/genetic studies.
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary team and specialty clinics including pediatric and neurosurgical staff.
• Demonstrates a courteous, customer-service oriented manner with patients, visitors and co-workers.
• Contributes to a productive, efficient work environment.
• Ensures statistics are up to date with oversight of EMU directors and department of neurophysiology.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives as instructed by EMU Directors.

Experience:

Minimum of 2 years in a specialized similar healthcare setting, required. Epilepsy specialty experience, preferred.

Education:

BSN / Social Worker Certification
