Job Description
The Department of Public Health at Santa Clara University (SCU), a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Public Health focused on LGBTQ+ health. This position will bring queer intersectional inquiry on health and well being to document, understand, and address LGBTQ+ health disparities.
Given the salience of the policy domain, and the relevance of public policy for building structural solutions to LGBTQ+ health disparities, we seek a scholar who brings a specific emphasis on institutional laws and policies that impact the health of LGBTQ+ populations. Within this context, we are looking for a teacher-scholar who will conduct research at the intersection of Public Health and Gender and Sexuality Studies, applying qualitative and/or ethnographic research methods, and community-based participatory research.
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to both teaching and research, be able to establish an active research program involving undergraduate students, and engage in service to the Department, College, and University. We encourage applications from scholars trained in Public Health and/or Health Policy including Health and Social Behavior, Health Policy, Social Welfare, or in Social Science fields such as Sociology, Anthropology, Gender Studies, as well as in Critical Gender Theory, Trans* Studies, and/or Sexuality Studies.
This position is part of an LGBTQ+/Queer Studies Cluster Hire in the College of Arts and Sciences at Santa Clara University. The College of Arts and Sciences is building a cohort of critical LGBTQ+/queer teaching and scholarship as part of an intersectional body of research, teaching and mentoring at SCU to contribute to the broader social and political good in light of increasing anti-LGBTQ+ policies and efforts across the US and in varied global contexts.
Departments participating in the LGBTQ+/Queer Studies Cluster Hire are Public Health, Women’s and Gender Studies, and English.
The Department of Public Health is an interdisciplinary department of teacher-scholars driven by a commitment to health equity and gender, sexual, and racial justice as foundations of public health. The Public Health major offers two academic areas of emphasis: Health Science and Health & Society. All students are required to complete a core set of Public Health courses. Our curriculum is based on a social determinants of health framework, understanding the nexus of social, structural, environmental, biological, and behavioral determinants of health. Areas of teaching need include an upper division Qualitative Research Methods course, an upper division Health Policy course; an upper division Ethics course; contributions to Departmental core courses (e.g. Introduction to Public Health, Evidence Based Public Health, and/or Senior Capstone); and an elective or required course related to the candidate's specialty area.
Located in the heart of northern California’s Silicon Valley, SCU is a private, Catholic Jesuit liberal arts university committed to promoting social justice in a comprehensive educational setting. It is an AA/EOE employer. Faculty are teacher-scholars who balance a commitment to quality teaching with active programs of research. We assess candidates based on scholarly and teaching potential; contribution to University, College, and Department priorities; potential to meet the criteria for promotion and tenure; and evaluation of diversity, equity and inclusion competencies. This position is 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service. A full-time teaching load is six courses per year on a quarter system (typically 2/2/2), assuming faculty are engaged in an active scholarship program. Housing assistance is available.
Department of Public Health faculty members often collaborate with colleagues in other SCU departments, including Anthropology, Biology, Communication, Environmental Sciences and Studies, Ethnic Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Womens and Gender Studies. The Department values community-engaged research, is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace, and strongly encourages applications from members of historically excluded groups, including people of color, women, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities. Over the last decade, Santa Clara University has recruited an increasingly diverse faculty, enrolled more diverse and low-income students, and it recently committed to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution.
