Ohio University, a Carnegie Foundation Research University, and The Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (HCOM) are seeking to expand their research related to aging and population health, and to improve the understanding of social determinants of health and health disparities.
We are currently accepting applications for an Assistant Professor in Population Health/Aging, a full-time, tenure-track appointment to begin August 16, 2025. This is a research-intensive position, with 80% protected time in the Department of Social Medicine in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine at Ohio University.
This research-intensive faculty member will be located on the university’s main campus in Athens, OH.
Expertise can include, but is not limited to, gerontology, the social and behavioral sciences, health professions, and public health/epidemiology with opportunities to collaborate with our preeminent healthcare system partners, including OhioHealth.
Candidates with a Ph.D. in a related field by the start date of the position are encouraged to apply. The candidate’s research in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is expected to complement the strong basic, clinical and social science efforts of the four Ohio University health research institutes: 1)The Diabetes Institute (DI) with focused efforts on treatment and management of diabetes and related chronic conditions; 2) the Infectious and Tropical Disease Institute (ITDI) with focused research on tropical disease, reproductive/sexual health, and bacterial pathogenesis; 3) the Ohio Musculoskeletal & Neurological Institute (OMNI) whose mission is improving the treatment, prevention and diagnosis of musculoskeletal and neurological disorders with focused efforts on healthy aging, and pain and injury; and 4) The Institute to Advance Health Equity (ADVANCE) which promotes research that contributes to the developing science of health equity and population health improvement through the study of health outcomes and services, as well as social factors that impact health. All four institutes currently feature numerous federally funded scientists and welcome additional members that will establish and maintain an extramurally funded research program that produces innovative, high impact scholarly activity in aging and population health. Research programs may also have a national and/or international focus with opportunities to collaborate with ongoing global health initiatives at Ohio University.
Primary Responsibilities:
The successful applicant is expected to establish and maintain a productive and externally funded research program that includes research mentoring and training of graduate, medical and other students. Teaching responsibilities will be assigned within HCOM, in line with the 10% teaching effort associated with this position. Service responsibilities may include assignments at the department, college, and university levels. Initially, this position will be allocated 80% to research, 10% to teaching and 10% to service, with a 9-month contract.

About Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine
Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking to hire a full-time instructional faculty member in the Department of Social Medicine. This is a full time, 11-month, non-tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Instruction. The qualified candidate will hold a PhD in the areas of social & health sciences, medical ethics, bioethics, biomedical ethics, health policy sciences, public health, population health, or closely related fields. This position offers candidates an opportunity to deliver team-based, interdisciplinary learning activities within an innovative curriculum that integrates biomedical, social, and clinical science content. Candidates must have teaching experience at the college/university level with willingness to learn new technology platforms.
The successful candidate will be housed within the Department of Social Medicine, a multi-disciplinary department comprised of social scientists who study health policy and politics, the social determinants of health, and factors affecting clinical decision-making. RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will be expected to teach medical students, representing about 80% of their time. Responsibilities include:
· Develop and deliver educational activities in a variety of active learning Modalities including:
•Case-based learning
•Integrated learning labs
•Small group coaching
•Problem-based learning
•Contribute to writing the social and public health aspects of educational medical cases
•Develop learning activities and pre-learning materials, including reading assignments, pre-recorded lectures, and live, interactive learning labs
•Serve as social medicine content expert for topics within the candidate’s area of expertise
•Create assessment questions for learning activities
•Facilitate small groups
•Serve on departmental and college-level committees
Requirements:
•PhD required by 8/1/2022 in areas of social & health sciences, medical ethics, bioethics, biomedical ethics, health policy sciences, public health, population health, or closely related fields
•Teaching experience at the college/university level with willingness to learn new technology platforms
