Overview
The Inpatient Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting and preparing blood specimens for laboratory testing while ensuring excellent patient care. This role involves reviewing physician orders, obtaining clinical and demographic information, and printing draw lists. The Inpatient Phlebotomist verifies patient identification and ensures the correct specimen type is collected for requested tests. This position serves as a vital link between the laboratory and patients, providing compassionate service and accurate specimen handling.
Responsibilities
Perform phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture, microcollection, bleeding times, blood cultures, and therapeutic phlebotomy for Blood Bank specimens.
Ensure positive patient identification and prioritize phlebotomy duties to maximize efficiency in specimen collection.
Adapt to changes in work schedules and patient volumes, utilizing downtime effectively to support departmental needs.
Answer phone calls to schedule tests, relay accurate information, and respond promptly to STAT draw requests from all patient care areas.
Efficiently direct calls to the appropriate personnel or department as needed.
Obtain and enter patient information into the Laboratory Information System (L.I.S.) and Hospital Information System (H.I.S.), including patient registration, demographics, and insurance updates.
Order test information, print labels, and label specimens accurately at the point of service.
Maintain phlebotomy equipment and manage inventory of necessary supplies.
Keep the patient drawing area clean, organized, and compliant with safety protocols.
Maintain the phlebotomy cart, ensuring adherence to safety measures.
Recognize the Phlebotomist-Registrar's role in supporting laboratory functions, patient care, customer service, and overall healthcare business operations.
Uphold biohazard safety protocols, including the use of the pneumatic tube system, manual delivery of specimens, and proper disposal of blood collection equipment.
Demonstrate excellent bedside manner and maintain a positive attitude toward patients.
Perform medical necessity checks prior to outpatient phlebotomy procedures.
Ensure specimens are packaged properly and delivered to Specimen Processing in a timely manner.
Serve as a resource for new employees, providing training and support as needed.
Qualifications
Open to entry-level graduates.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively, pleasantly, and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital staff, and the public.
Ability to work effectively under pressure and maintain composure in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to enhance knowledge of laboratory and hospital functions.
Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem-solving.
Phlebotomy certification required within one year of employment.
