The Director of Newborn Services has the responsibility for overseeing the medical care provided to newborns in newborn nurseries and neonatal intensive care units throughout the Geisinger Health System.
The Director will develop newborn practice standards that are patient-centered, efficient, effective, equitable, integrated, and safe and maintained throughout GHS.
The Director will partner with the respective newborn nursery and NICU directors to implement consistent best practice.
The Director will monitor and improve the transitions of care between OB units, nurseries and NICUs within GHS.
The Director will develop performance improvement initiatives in GHS NBNs and NICUs. The director will integrate consensus driven and evidence based clinical practice guidelines to address common disorders affecting newborns.
Partnering with the Pediatric Director of Research, the Director will promote collaborative research that can have a meaningful impact on newborn health.
The Director will ensure compliance with newborn educational curriculum developed for medical students at the Geisinger Commonwealth Medical College and pediatric residents at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital.
The Director will collaborate with Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine to identify and resource growth opportunities within the Geisinger service area.
The Director is responsible for clinical oversight of physicians fulfilling leadership roles within newborn nursery and NICUs including The Division Chief of Neonatology and Newborn Nursery Site Directors.
The GHS Director of Newborn Services will report directly to the Chair of Pediatrics.
This position is allotted a 0.25 FTE to complete the following duties and responsibilities.
Job Duties
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Align newborn care practices by collaborating with directors of nurseries and NICUs to develop
consistent, family-centered, and evidence-based practices to be implemented system-wide.
Enhance connectivity and collaboration amongst GHS nursery and NICU directors.
Identify neonatal performance improvement initiatives to be conducted across nurseries and NICUs to improve patient outcomes.
Lead Geisinger’s participation in Pennsylvania Perinatal Quality Collaborative.
Monitor quality measures and outcomes for newborns at GHS facilities. Collaborate with nursery and NICU directors to complete PI projects aimed at improving clinical outcomes.
Monitor neonatal transport practices between GHS nurseries and NICUs. Review transport data with nursery directors.
Establish quarterly mortality and morbidity reviews of all GHS newborn nurseries and NICUs
Monitor patient satisfaction with care delivered at GHS nurseries and NICUs. Collaborate with specific unit directors to improve patient satisfaction when indicated.
Collaborate with the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics to assure appropriate care for selected patients is provided in GHS nurseries and NICUs.
Collaborate with the Director of Maternal Fetal Medicine to identify growth areas within the Geisinger Service area.
Advise the Chair of Pediatrics regarding physician practice needs and program growth opportunities.
Provide peer review for physicians providing newborn care as required.
Conduct a minimum of biannual site visits to each GHS NICU and newborn nursery.
Provide annual performance evaluations of NBN and NICU directors.
Provide performance improvement plans and remediation when necessary for NBN and NICU physicians and midlevel providers
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Proven ability to function in a matrixed administrative environment.
Proven ability to maintain strong collaborative relationships across disciplines.
Proven ability to communicate both written and verbally in a timely, accurate, professional and respectful manner with all members of the health care team.
Capable of strong leadership and decision-making skills in challenging and diverse situations.
Reasonable flexibility in work schedule and travel requirements.
Position Details
REQUIREMENTS:
MD or DO certification from an accredited US or international medical school.
Successful completion of a US pediatric or medicine pediatric residency.
Successful completion of a neonatology fellowship with current board certification in neonatology.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a leadership role, preferably Division Chief, Unit Director, or Program Director.
