Leads the planning and implementation of complex investigations of chronic and communicable diseases, health conditions, and their social determinants as part of an expanding Division of Epidemiology and Population Health. Provides expertise in statistical design, data management, data visualization, and data analysis for health programs, to support policy, and for public health research.
The successful candidate will undertake the following key activities:
Collect and analyze surveillance, epidemiologic, and population data to inform, prioritize, and monitor the delivery of interventions to reduce health burden and health inequities.
Identify, maintain, and use county-level databases and state or national databases with county- and sub-county-level data to describe, monitor trends, and compare local and national situations for chronic and communicable health conditions.
Analyze and monitor trends in health inequities and their determinants by race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors; characterize affected populations, assess proximal and distal risk factors, and develop risk profiles for specific groups and communities to inform County programs and policies.
Develop and formulate procedures for collecting data and validating integrity; analyze collected data and characterize the epidemiologic nature of the problem.
Collaborate with Division epidemiologists and other agency staff to develop plans for data collection, conduct complex statistical analyses to monitor programs, and assess effectiveness and impacts.
Collaborate with Division epidemiologists and other agency staff to develop and manage internal and external data visualization of program data.
Independently and in collaboration with other epidemiology staff, design, implement and analyze public health research.
Design and perform appropriate methodologic procedures for study design, sampling, statistical analysis, overall descriptive statistics, exploratory data analyses, and confirmatory data analyses, including statistical tests and/or modeling.
Prepare statistical sections for research protocols, reports, presentations and scientific manuscripts.
Support the development of analytic and statistical skills by Epidemiology and Population Health and other FCHD staff, including use of statistical analysis software packages and biostatistical techniques for different types of data.
Consult with other Fairfax County agency epidemiologists, demographers, and statisticians; serve as the Health Department representative to the County’s Data and Analytics Advisory Group.
The Division of Epidemiology and Population Health includes about 25 Doctoral and Masters level Epidemiologists and Public Health Nurses. Programs include Acute and Chronic Communicable Diseases, Population Health and Environmental Epidemiology. Primary roles of the Division include characterizing and monitoring disease burden and health disparities; investigating disease outbreaks and recommending preventive measures; implementing and evaluating impacts of prevention programs and policies; conducting public health research; and communicating with scientific and lay stakeholders.
Fairfax County is the largest health jurisdiction in Virginia and in the National Capital Region with about 1.2 million people. The population is demographically diverse with over 30% being foreign born and almost 40% speaking a language other than English at home. FCHD’s location allows for the development of partnerships with leaders in public health at Federal agencies, universities, and non-profits across the National Capital Region.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced degree in epidemiology: doctorate degree (PhD) plus two years of experience in epidemiology-related work, or master's degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science (MS) with graduate work in epidemiology and/or biostatistics plus five years of experience in epidemiology-related work.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid driver's license. AED- Required within 60 days CPR- Required within 60 days
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: PhD in Biostatistics, Epidemiology or a related quantitative field. Previous experience working at a local or state health department, or a federal health agency (e.g., CDC, FDA, NIH). Previous work experience in chronic diseases, injury, substance use, or health disparities. Experience working with staff who have a range of training and experience, from doctoral level epidemiologists to postgraduate student interns.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, a sanction screening, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Job is generally sedentary in nature; however, job entails walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, reaching and bending. Employee may be required to lift or carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor. Incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Ability to drive a vehicle. Generally works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting.
